Mount Vernon, Westchester County: Local initiatives to curb substance abuse

Mount Vernon, located in Westchester County, has witnessed a concerning rise in drug overdose fatalities, particularly during the pandemic. In 2020, the county recorded 119 overdose deaths, marking an increase of 28 compared to the previous year. Mount Vernon also had many nonfatal cases, which still have a significant emotional and mental impact on individuals and their families.

In 2022, the Overdose Prevention Initiative (ORI) was launched in Westchester County in response to drug overdose trends. This initiative serves as a collaborative effort, bringing together stakeholders from across the county to work collectively in preventing further overdose deaths. The primary focus of ORI is to ensure that residents are aware of the range of support services available within the Westchester County, and to assist them in overcoming substance use disorders. By promoting awareness and facilitating access to these vital resources, the initiative aims to effectively combat substance abuse in the county and ultimately save lives.

Ten people were charged because of cocaine distribution in Mount Vernon

In November 2022, law enforcement agencies in Westchester County, New York, unveiled charges against ten individuals involved in narcotics distribution and firearm offenses. The defendants were accused of participating in a conspiracy to distribute over 280 grams of crack cocaine. The FBI, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Mount Vernon Police Department, and Westchester County Department of Public Safety all participated in the investigation.
