Community Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Lutz, FL and Hillsborough County
Project Opioid Tampa Bay was launched in early 2021 to combat the opioid epidemic in Lutz, Hillsborough County, and the rest of the Tampa Bay area. The project educates the community about the opioid epidemic in the area, available treatment options, and resources. In addition to education and providing resources to those that need them, the group is using new ideas to develop strategies to reduce opioid-related fatalities in the community.
Jennifer Webb is the project manager of Project Opioid Tampa Bay and former Pinellas County State Representative. “Opioid overdoses are one of the only overdoses that need not be fatal. You can take naloxone, and it can quickly reverse your overdose and you live,” said Webb. “Yet, the Tampa Bay area fares far worse than most of the rest of the state, and our state fared not so great in comparison to the rest of the nation.”
