Local Initiatives to Curb Substance Abuse in Limerick, PA

In 2021, Montgomery County introduced the Law Enforcement Treatment Initiative (LETI) in an effort to reduce the recurring substance abuse of local offenders. Montgomery and close to 15 other Pennsylvania counties have adopted this program, which works to provide treatment services to drug offenders rather than diverting them into the criminal system.

With accidental drug overdose a main cause of death in Pennsylvania, LETI operates by quickly screening drug offenders at the time of their potential arrest for program acceptance. If the Montgomery County resident is approved for the state-issued program, a police officer will offer a ride to the facility where the resident will begin their substance abuse treatment program.

Laws and Regulations Relating to Substance Abuse in Limerick, PA

In 2019, Pennsylvania lawmakers passed Act 112 to require prescribing health professionals in the state to first educate their patients on opioid use as well as establish a treatment agreement before issuing the first prescription for treatment of chronic pain. During this process, a prescriber must first counsel the patient on treatment goals, benefits, and the risks of ongoing opioid use.

A physician prescribing opioids must also obtain patient consent to undergo targeted urinalysis drug testing. By gathering testing consent and establishing a treatment agreement, a doctor can more effectively monitor for abuse concerns and properly adjust the treatment approach when necessary. This enhanced approach to prescribing highly addictive opioids can reduce the chance of patients not only becoming addicted to the medication but also succumbing to deadly overdose.
