Hawaii Receives Federal Funds to Fight Opioid and Meth Abuse

In late 2020, Hawaii received over $4 million in federal funding to help the state respond to its opioid and methamphetamine problem. The purpose of this grant is to assist with funding for prevention, treatment, and recovery programs. Previously, this money was only available for opioid programs. However, it has now been expanded to address Hawaii's ongoing problem with meth.

While the state has had a problem with meth use and addiction for decades, meth-related deaths have spiked in recent years. The hope is that this grant will help reduce the number of deaths and negative impacts of drug addiction.

Hawaii Opioid Initiative Helps Address Local Opioid Problem

The Hawaii Opioid Initiative is a collaboration of public safety, public health, community partners, and healthcare professionals. This organization's overall objective is to address drug misuse and overdoses. One of their initiatives is the placement of drug "take back" drop-boxes, where residents can properly dispose of prescription drugs. There are drop locations throughout the state, including one in the lobby of the Lanai Police Station, located at 855 Fraser Ave in Lanai City.
