Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the people being tested. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory. Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone’s DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by registering online and shipping the specimens to us.

Legally Admissible DNA Tests vs. “Peace of Mind” At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible DNA testing service. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. In order for the results of a DNA test to hold up in court, for child support, or to change the name on a birth certificate, the test must be done at a clinic using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Lanai City DNA testing technicians are trained to follow guidelines that ensure that the results can be used for legal purposes.

Lifelong Friends from Hawaii Learn They’re Brothers

Alan Robinson and Walter Macfarlane first met in elementary school and were friends for 60 years. Both were born in Honolulu, they played on the same high school football team, and as adults, they vacationed together with their spouses and children.

Imagine their surprise when Macfarlane took a DNA test in search of his birth father, only to learn that he and Robinson had the same birth mother! Macfarlane was adopted and raised by his grandfather. Fifteen months later, when Robinson was born, he was immediately put up for adoption and never knew the identity of either of his birth parents.

After discovering the relationship, they were shocked that they had never noticed their similarities before. Today, the two men couldn’t be more thrilled and now go to lunch together nearly every day. They’re busy planning many other adventures together in the future.

Adopted Maui County Woman Discovers 8 Siblings

Lynn Mendelsohn, a resident of Maui, took a DNA test in 2019. While she had always known she was adopted, she was never really curious about her biological family. Instead, she took the test to learn more about her ethnicity. While she was interested to learn that she’s 48% Italian, she was even more surprised to learn she had eight siblings!

Since the discovery, the siblings have met and are happy to have connected. They continue to make plans for future get-togethers.

Establishing Paternity in Lanai City

In Lanai City, and the rest of Hawaii, there are three ways legal paternity is established. First, if a child is born to parents who are married or the parents get married after the child is born, the mother’s husband is automatically deemed to be the child’s legal father. If the parents are not married, they can sign and file a Voluntary Establishment of Paternity (VEP) form.

If there’s a dispute or question about the identity of the child’s father or either parent does not want to sign the VEP form, one of the interested parties will need to file a paternity petition in family court. Typically, the courts will require a DNA test before issuing a ruling.
