Substance Abuse Statistics for Gary, IN
Notable Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Gary, IN
Back in November 2021, two Indiana men were arrested by federal authorities after an airplane was seized at the Gary International Airport. According to reports, Sebastian Vazquez-Gamez of Mexico arrived at Gary International Airport on a plane from Houston that originated from Mexico. Law enforcement witnessed Gamez unload suitcases from a plane where they were placed into a vehicle.
Law enforcement then followed Gamez and his accomplices to a local hotel, where the suitcases were then transferred to another vehicle driven by Rodrigo Alexis Jimenez-Perez of Columbus, Indiana. Perez was later pulled over by officers a few blocks away, where they searched the vehicle and discovered 80 brick-shaped packages wrapped in black tape.
Once assessed by law enforcement, it was discovered that the packages contained 176 pounds of cocaine. Perez was arrested and charged with possession and intent to distribute. Back at the hotel where Gamez was staying, an additional 20 bricks of cocaine were discovered, bringing the total to 220 pounds. Federal law enforcement believes the operation was part of a suspected Mexico-to-Chicago drug pipeline.
