Back in March 2021, the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office announced the successful takedown of a major East Meadow/Hempstead area narcotics trafficking ring. Titled “Operation Honeycomb,” the FBI Long Island Gang Task Force, ATF Task Force, NCPD, Postal Service, DEA, and State Police partnered to indict 40 individuals for their role in the trafficking ring.
According to reports, the investigation began in October 2019 after an increase in violence and drug dealing was being seen throughout the Hempstead area. Law enforcement began conducting surveillance on the area and was able to identify a few large-scale narcotic sellers. Several of these drug dealers sold a cocktail of heroin, fentanyl, and cocaine, with one defendant allegedly cutting heroin with fentanyl and morphine.
As the investigation expanded, law enforcement identified nine individuals as the contributing major traffickers in this operation. After executing numerous search warrants, officials seized an estimated $2,772,000 in narcotics as well as 38 firearms and more than $380,000 in cash. Officials believe these narcotics originated from Puerto Rico, California, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Connecticut.

The New York State Drug Take Back Act was established in 2019 to require drug manufacturers and pharmacy chains to fund, establish, and manage drug take-back programs in the state of New York. These drug take-back programs must be approved by the state and offer a way for unwanted drugs to be safely collected and disposed of. This program aims to protect adolescents and those at risk of addiction issues from accessing unused controlled substances found around the home.
