Notable News Events in Deltona, FL

In April 2022, the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office announced six arrests after an investigation led to a series of drug seizures across the DeLand and Deltona areas. In the first raid, law enforcement executed a search warrant at a home on Howry Ave., where 30g of crack cocaine, 24g of powder cocaine, 17g of heroin, 25g of methamphetamine, and 64 Alprazolam pills were recovered.

At the time of the raid, two children ages 9 months and 14 years old were inside the home. Four people were charged with narcotics possession and distribution, including the father of the children, who was also charged with child neglect. The second raid came after a two-month investigation where a Deltona home was identified as a crack cocaine sale house. Two additional individuals were arrested and charged with the sale and delivery of cocaine within 1,000 feet of a park.

Local Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse in Deltona, FL

Volusia County recently announced they are being awarded $10 million to fight the ongoing effects of the opioid epidemic following a settlement with the state of Florida and several big pharmacy chains. In recent years, the amount of opioid overdose deaths has increased significantly across Deltona and Volusia County, and county officials hope these funds can help curb these rising numbers.

From enhancements to county substance treatment and recovery programs to law enforcement funding, there are many ways county officials feel they can better address the ongoing concern. Volusia county leaders have developed a special advisory board and are continuing to review various programs and services to understand how these funds can be used to effectively combat the opioid problem.
