Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Delta DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Library Hosts Workshop to Teach Basics of DNA Testing in Delta, Colorado

Since 2017, Delta Library has hosted a one-of-a-kind DNA testing workshop. The seminar is taught by Greg Hart, an amateur genealogist who began his journey into the world of genealogy when investigating his own background. Hart says he organized the short course at Delta Library because "Libraries are repositories of genealogical information that I tap regularly for family tree information. I frequently use the online library for access to historical literature and full genealogical charts of family tree branches. And Delta County Libraries provides gathering space for our genealogy groups."

Hart's workshop at the Delta Library spans two days and includes discussions about DNA biology and how DNA testing works. Participants learn how to use their DNA test results and take advantage of DNA databases.

Delta, CO Officials Embrace DNA Testing Trend and Map Local Cemetery

Delta local Sandy Dix joined officials from several organizations to set up a GPS and mapping system that allows people to search for and locate the graves of loved ones long passed. Collaborating with local Geographic Information Systems (GIS) experts along with representatives from the city of Delta, Delta County, and the Town of Hotchkiss, Dix was inspired with the idea after starting a job in the district and learning about a similar project in Boulder County.

Dix wanted to digitize the cemetery's records and map the graves in 3-D to safely store the information and make it easily available to family members of the deceased. With the growth in popularity of consumer DNA testing, she realized the importance of having this information in an online database accessible to anyone. Pinpointing the physical location of the graves enables loved ones to visit the graves they've discovered.
