Specimens we can test for DNA
The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.
Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone’s DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.
Legal DNA Tests vs. “Peace of Mind” At-Home Tests
A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.
When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Concord DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Proving Paternity for Child Custody Purposes in Concord
If a child is born to married parents or parents who are in a registered domestic partnership, the members of the couple are legally presumed to be the child’s parents. Legal determination of paternity or parentage in California can be complex. California accommodates domestic partners, same-sex couples, and opposite-sex couples in its legal parentage process. Even if a man is not the biological father of a child and is not married to the child’s mother, if he has welcomed a child into his home openly, he may be presumed to be the child’s father through a process called “parentage by estoppel.”
A California man who doesn’t believe that he is the biological father of a child can request genetic (DNA) testing. If a child is receiving services through the Child Support Services office, they may be able to receive DNA testing through the Family Court, located on Pine Street in Martinez. Contra Costa County’s Child Support Services office is located on Douglas Drive in Martinez.
Local DNA Stories
In 2020, Roxane Gruenheid, a retired Contra Costa County sheriff’s detective, contacted San Bernardino County authorities to follow up on the case of “Lisa,” a “living Jane Doe” child case. A living “Jane Doe” is a child or adult who has unknown parents. Lisa, whose birth name is Dawn Beaudin, was young woman with unknown parents, kidnapped by a notorious bicoastal serial killer that Gruenheid had helped put behind bars.
Numerous DNA tests eventually helped to uncover “Lisa’s” birth family. Over 200 of Dawn “Lisa” Beaudin’s relatives were eventually uncovered, including cousins, her grandfather, and her missing mother, who had lost her life to the serial killer.
Experts Say …
Forensic genealogist Dr. Barbara Rae-Venter worked on the case of Lisa, the living “Jane Doe” who was eventually revealed through genetic testing to be Dawn Beaudin. She said, “normally when you’re working with adoptees, you have some information. You know where they’re born, you have a birth date. In Lisa’s case, we had no idea where she was from,” she continued. “All we had was her DNA.”
