Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Fairfield DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Fairfield, California - DNA Testing

Establishing paternity in Fairfield, California

Establishing paternity means that the father is legally recognized as the parent of a child. Paternity must be established when parents are not married; otherwise, the husband is considered the legal father without taking further steps. In Fairfield, there are three ways of doing so. Parents can sign a Voluntary Declaration of Parentage (VDP), go to their local Child Support Agency, or go to court.

Usually, if parents have no doubts about paternity, they opt for signing the VDP as it is the quickest way of establishing paternity. However, if there is a disagreement about who the biological father is, the court or Child Support Agency should be a better option. Both of them will likely ask the father and the child to take a DNA test. DNA testing is usually done with a simple cheek swab and can easily prove if there is a relationship between the man and the child.

Fairfield, California: Challenging paternity

Sometimes, if the alleged father does not believe he is the birth father, he can do a DNA test. This is usually best done before parentage has been established. However, the DNA test must be administered at a clinic that can provide a court-admissible DNA report. Home DNA testing options are not usually admissible in a court of law and should only be used for the father's own information or peace of mind.

If paternity was established by both parents signing a VDP, then a Voluntary Declaration of Parentage Rescission form must be completed within 60 days to rescind parentage. After 60 days have passed, the parents must usually go to court.

If a court order already establishes a man as the child's legal father, it can be very difficult to dispute the relationship. If you are in a situation where you want to dispute paternity, it is best to contact a family lawyer.

Fairfield Man Discovers Unknown Daughter

Paul Cullen, a 76-year-old Fairfield resident, was shocked to learn he had a daughter he never knew about. The story began when two half-sisters who shared the same mother found each other online. They then each went looking for their birth fathers. It was during this search that Paul learned a one-night liaison when he was 19 years old resulted in a pregnancy. The child's mother, who was 18 at the time, gave the baby up for adoption.

His daughter is now 55 years old. She's a retired lieutenant colonel and a hospital administrator in Bend, Oregon. The two have reunited and they now speak to each other every week.
