Like many cities and towns across the United States, the Cicero area struggles with the opioid epidemic. Since 2012, 1,225 people have died in Onondaga County from opioid overdoses. While heroin was once the primary cause of opioid fatalities in the area, now they are almost exclusively fentanyl related. In 2023, there have been an average of 30 to 65 fatal and non-fatal overdoses in Onondaga County each week, with a total of 33 overdose deaths in the first quarter of 2023 alone.

Community Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Cicero

In an effort to curb illegal drug use in the Cicero area, more than 50 local agencies have teamed up to form the Onondaga County Drug Task Force (DTF). This task force combined multiple initiatives focused on addiction and illegal substance abuse in the area. The organization is focused on preventing, treating, and reversing the ongoing opioid health crisis. The task force includes members of the medical community, the County Health Department, law enforcement, and community organizations. Current initiatives include data sharing, resource sharing, and collaboration between agencies.
