Avuncular DNA Test (aunt/uncle and niece/nephew)

Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the people being tested. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory. Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by registering online and shipping the specimens to us.

Legally Admissible DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible DNA testing service. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. In order for the results of a DNA test to hold up in court, for child support, or to change the name on a birth certificate, the test must be done at a clinic using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Cambridge DNA testing technicians are trained to follow guidelines that ensure that the results can be used for legal purposes.

Establishing paternity in Cambridge, MA

When parents are married, paternity is typically established automatically without any need for further actions. However, establishing paternity can be more complicated when parents are not married, especially if they disagree about the biological father.

If there is a disagreement, the parents may need to go to court and have the judge establish paternity. The judge will often order a DNA test for the child and the father to determine whether there is a father-child relationship. Once the judge has the DNA results, they can consider this information while determining paternity.

If Cambridge parents agree about paternity but are unwed, they can establish paternity themselves. They both need to sign a Voluntary Acknowledgement of Paternity and then file it with the Registry of Vital Records. Note that when you sign the documents, there must be a notary public present. This legally binding document should not be signed if parents are not sure of paternity.

Cambridge, Massachusetts: Benefits of establishing paternity

By establishing paternity, parents give their children benefits they would not get otherwise. Some of these benefits can include the following:

Better sense of identity - studies have shown that kids who know both parents are better connected to family and have a better chance of finishing school and not ending up in jail

Better knowledge about health on both sides of the family since they can gain access to medical history and discover any potential inherited health threats

Financial support from both parents

Access to father's health insurance, Social Security, pension, and veterans benefits, if applicable

They can gain the right to inheritance

Establishing paternity is also beneficial for the father. By becoming the child's legal father, he can get the same rights and responsibilities as the mother. After paternity has been established, the father can also ask the court to establish custody and visitation if necessary. He can also help make critical decisions for the child, such as education, health, or religious upbringing.
