Million-Dollar Drug Bust Off the Coast of Barceloneta
There are fewer drugs in Puerto Rico, thanks to a major bust that occurred off the coast of Barceloneta in 2020. After noticing two suspicious 21-foot vessels, authorities managed to seize 77 kilos of cocaine with an estimated value of over $1 million. Border control also dealt with two individuals who had an undefined immigration status.
Busts like this are fairly common, now that Puerto Rico has been designated as a High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA). Since being put in place, HIDTA has dismantled or disrupted more than 2,882 drug trafficking and money laundering organizations. Some of the initiatives under HIDTA include enforcement, intelligence and information sharing, prevention, treatment, and training efforts. Other support initiatives include funding for forensic laboratories, technical support, and information technology.
