Albuquerque, New Mexico: Drug abuse trends

Often ranking higher than the national average, drug overdose is a problem in New Mexico. In 2018, New Mexico was about 29 percent higher in fatal overdoses than the rest of the U.S.

Although men are the primary demographic for suffering from drug addictions in the area, an alarming number of high school students also admitted to drug abuse. The survey showed New Mexico students were the second-highest group of high school students to use cocaine and ecstasy in the nation. They were also the fifth highest for using methamphetamine and eighth highest for heroin. Twenty-five percent of New Mexico students surveyed confessed to marijuana use.

Local initiatives to curb substance abuse in Albuquerque, NM

The City of Albuquerque can fund treatment for those who suffer from substance abuse disorder if it is deemed necessary by a treatment provider of the city. The individual must also meet the following criteria:

After conducting the assessment, the treatment provider can schedule the client to start the services.

Additionally, OSAP (The Office of Substance Abuse Prevention) is dedicated to substance abuse prevention services in New Mexico. They are committed to delivering effective prevention services that can reduce the abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and drugs. Some of their priorities are reducing underage drinking and driving under the influence, minimizing the abuse of prescription painkillers, lowering the rate of binge drinking by adults, and decreasing the number of deaths caused by opioids and painkillers.
