Massachusetts Modifies "Ban the Box" Law
In October of 2018, the state of Massachusetts made some significant changes to its rules regarding employment background checks. According to Proskauer Law Firm, which provides services to clients in Boston and several other major cities worldwide, the new rules added more restrictions on the ways employers can use criminal history information when making hiring decisions.
The "Ban the Box" law, which was first enacted in Mass. in 2010, prohibits employers from asking about a job applicant's criminal record on the initial written application. The law also prohibits employers from asking about certain criminal records during any phase of the application process.
The new rules limit the time period for disclosing misdemeanor convictions, prohibit employers from asking about criminal records that have been expunged or sealed, and require employers to provide a specific disclosure to applicants when asking for criminal record information.

14 Massachusetts Police Officers Discharged for Conduct Violations
A recent report by the Boston Herald found that between 2020 and 2021, a total of 14 Massachusetts State Police Troopers were dishonorably discharged for offenses ranging from accusations of domestic violence to failing to report a stolen gun.
The department's current commander Col. Christopher Mason had been appointed to clean up the organization after several scandals. However, Dennis Galvin, who is president of the Massachusetts Association for Professional Law Enforcement and a retired police officer, says the department is "a mess." He suggests that better hiring and background check policies could have helped to avoid this situation.
