Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the people being tested. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory. Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by registering online and shipping the specimens to us.

Legally Admissible DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible DNA testing service. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. In order for the results of a DNA test to hold up in court, for child support, or to change the name on a birth certificate, the test must be done at a clinic using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Worcester DNA testing technicians are trained to follow guidelines that ensure that the results can be used for legal purposes.

Worcester, Massachusetts - DNA Testing

Local DNA Stories

After 30 years of searching, a Florida man met his brother from Worcester for the first time, thanks to DNA testing.

The 73-year-old Florida man, who always knew he was adopted, never knew about his birth parents. But after taking a DNA test in 2017, he discovered he had a brother, John DiPietro, in Worcester. The Florida man, Anthony Granito, was surprised when his family arranged a surprise meeting for the two brothers in December of 2018. Granito went to his brother's house in Worcester and took pictures and exchanged stories. "It's the best thing that has ever happened, besides my kids being born," he said. Granito also learned he has four half-siblings located in Massachusetts and Maryland.

Proving Paternity for Child Custody Purposes in Worcester, MA

In Worcester, if a mother and father are married when a child is born, the husband becomes the child's legal father. If there is any doubt that the husband is the child's biological father, DNA testing can prove paternity.

If the parents are not married at the time of the child's birth, they must establish paternity for the child to have a legal father. In Worcester, paternity can be established by signing a Voluntary Acknowledgement of Paternity if both parents agree to sign the form. If they do not agree, they can go to court, and the judge may order DNA testing.

DNA tests are very accurate at proving paternity with over 99% certainty. When DNA testing is ordered, the lab compares genetic markers from a simple cheek swab.

Experts Say...

"In the past, the courts often favored mothers in child custody, visitation, and child support proceedings," explains the Law Offices of Bailey & Burke, a law firm serving Worcester. "Today, the importance of fathers in the life of a child is understood by the courts. Through paternity actions, fathers can assert their rights and play a more integral part in the lives of their children."
