Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the people being tested. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory. Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by registering online and shipping the specimens to us.

Legally Admissible DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible DNA testing service. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. In order for the results of a DNA test to hold up in court, for child support, or to change the name on a birth certificate, the test must be done at a clinic using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Wadsworth DNA testing technicians are trained to follow guidelines that ensure that the results can be used for legal purposes.

Local DNA Stories

After taking a DNA test in 2021, a Wadsworth woman found her son who she put up for adoption in 1988. Melanie Pressley had her son at the age of 18 and knew she couldn't care for him financially, so she used an adoption agency in Akron to find him a home that could. Her son, Greg Vossler, was adopted by a family in Stow, who moved to Winchester, Virginia when Greg was 7 years old. Pressley eventually got married and had more children, but always thought about her son. Greg also wanted to know more about his birth parents, and in 2019, took a DNA test. Pressley also took a DNA test in 2021, which connected the mother and son. Pressley immediately messaged him and the two talked. Their conversation revealed that Greg got married and has two sons of his own. In June of 2021, the mother and son saw each other for the first time since 1988, and he also met 17 other family members.

Experts Say...

The Law Offices of Andrew M. Parker, serving Wadsworth and Medina County, explained why it's important to establish paternity. "It takes two people to conceive a child, and both of those parents should also provide support for their child until he or she reaches adulthood," explained the law firm. "However, ensuring that this support is provided and that both parents can have a relationship with their child can sometimes be difficult to do if the parents are unmarried. That is why it is important to legally establish the child's paternity.

Proving Paternity for Child Custody Purposes in Wadsworth, OH

The easiest way for unmarried Wadsworth parents to establish paternity is by signing an Acknowledgment of Paternity Affidavit, a voluntary form stating the child's legal father. Parents can sign the form at the hospital when the child is born or later at the local Child Support Enforcement Agency, located in Medina. If either parent questions paternity, they should obtain a DNA test before signing the form. If they cannot agree to sign the voluntary form, they can establish paternity through an Administrative Court Order or an Order of Paternity, both of which generally require a DNA test to prove the child's biological father. DNA tests are 99.9% accurate in determining the probability that a man is the father.
