Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Selma DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Selma, AL - DNA Testing

Establishing Paternity in Selma, AL

In Selma, if a child is born to married parents, the husband is presumed to be the child's father. If a child is born within 300 days of a divorce, the former husband becomes the child's legal father. However, if a child is born outside of marriage, the parents must establish paternity for the child to have a legal father. In Selma, the easiest way to establish paternity is by signing a voluntary paternity establishment form. If the parents cannot establish paternity voluntarily, they can go to court. The court can also issue child support, custody, and visitation orders.

Selma parents filing for custody or paternity establishment shall file at the Child Support Division at the Office of the Dallas County Circuit Clerk, located at 105 Lauderdale Street in Selma.

Proving Paternity for Child Custody Purposes in Selma, AL

DNA testing can determine paternity in cases where the parents are unsure of the child's biological father. Once a DNA test proves paternity, the parents can file a Petition to Establish Paternity, and the court can make an official paternity order. Parents can request DNA testing if either one questions the child's biological father. The court may also order DNA testing to determine paternity in court cases. In Selma and the state of Alabama, the court presumes the man a child's father if the DNA test shows a 97% or greater probability that a man is the child's biological father.

The Importance of Establishing Paternity in Selma, AL

Unmarried Selma parents and their children benefit from establishing paternity. When children have two legal parents, they can develop relationships with them both. Mothers receive help with the costs of raising a child and help with parental responsibilities. Establishing paternity also provides fathers with rights to visitation and custody. Children benefit by having emotional bonds with both parents, gaining access to medical records from both sides of the family, and receiving financial support, medical insurance, inheritance, life insurance, and other available benefits.
