Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our San Pedro DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

San Pedro, California - DNA Testing

Local DNA Stories

In 2018, long-lost brothers and sisters reunited thanks to DNA testing. Jeff Adams grew up in Torrance in the 1970s. He was raised by his biological mother and a man that he thought was his biological father. But he always wondered who he was since he didn't look like anyone. His mother got divorced when he was 10. Years later, he and his brother took a DNA test and discovered they did not have the same father. Five years later, Julie Rogan of San Pedro was doing research to determine that she had an ancestor that signed the Declaration of Independence. During her research, she took a DNA test. Initially, Julie had no matches. But after checking months later, she had a match, and he looked just like her father. She emailed the man, who happened to be Jeff, and he quickly responded. Jeff learned he had two sisters, one in San Pedro and one in Torrance, who both went to San Pedro high schools. He also learned he had an older brother. Brandon Blaylock of San Diego knew he was adopted and took a DNA test and found his brother, Jeff Adams. The four siblings reconnected and are making up decades of lost time.

Experts Say...

"Establishing parentage means obtaining a court order or signing an official declaration of parentage or paternity that says who the legal parents of a child are," explains William D. Evans, an attorney serving San Pedro. "For example, if the parents of a child were not married when the mother became pregnant or when the child was born, the child does not have a legal father until parentage is established." He goes on to explain that even if the man can prove he is the child's biological father, if he wasn't married to the child's mother, he has no legal rights to the child nor any legal responsibilities. To form a legally binding connection, parentage must be officially established.

Proving Paternity for Child Custody Purposes in San Pedro, CA

In San Pedro, unmarried parents can establish paternity voluntarily by signing an Acknowledgement of Parentage form. Paternity can also be established in court. If a father does not admit paternity, the court will likely order DNA testing to determine if he's the child's biological father. Paternity must be established for the court to issue child support, visitation, and custody orders.
