Avuncular DNA Test (aunt/uncle and niece/nephew)

Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the people being tested. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory. Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by registering online and shipping the specimens to us.

Legally Admissible DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible DNA testing service. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. In order for the results of a DNA test to hold up in court, for child support, or to change the name on a birth certificate, the test must be done at a clinic using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Carson DNA testing technicians are trained to follow guidelines that ensure that the results can be used for legal purposes.

Carson, California - DNA Testing

California's Paternity Opportunity Program (POP)

In Carson and the rest of the state of California, unwed parents can establish legal paternity by voluntarily participating in the state's Parentage Opportunity Program (POP). According to the LA County website, the term "parentage" refers to the legal recognition of a parental relationship to a child. This can be done by signing and filing a Voluntary Declaration of Parentage (VDOP) form, which has the same effect and force as receiving a judgment of parentage from the courts.

Parents should only sign this form if they believe the man is the only possible genetic father. After signing, either parent can cancel or rescind the declaration within 60 days, unless court orders for child support, custody, or visitation have already been issued.

Other Ways to Establish Paternity in California

If both parents do not agree about the identity of a child's biological father, a Voluntary Declaration of Parentage cannot be used to establish legal paternity. In this case, there are two options. The first is to request that your local child support agency (LCSA) bring an action of parentage, which establishes paternity and child support at the same time. Carson residents can find their LCSA by visiting the California Child Support Services website.

The second option is to file a case with a Los Angeles County court, requesting an action to establish parentage. In many cases, the court will require a DNA test to confirm biological paternity before making a ruling.

Benefits of Establishing Paternity in California

There are many reasons to take the steps required to establish a child's legal paternity. According to experts at The Law Offices of Steven A. Blunt, an attorney who serves clients in Carson and the surrounding area, once paternity is established, the child's father and mother both have equal rights. This includes the right to:

In addition, once paternity has been established, the child will be able to access benefits based on the father's records. This may include Social Security, veterans' benefits, access to the father's health insurance, and the ability to receive an inheritance from the father.
