Pinellas Park, FL Drug Testing
Florida #2 Nationwide for Drug Overdoses
Data recently released by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) shows that opioid overdose deaths across the country increased by 29.4% in 2020. However, Florida far surpassed this. The state saw a 37% increase from 2019 to 2020, making it the second-worst in the nation. Sadly, 7,579 people died of overdoses in Florida last year. In Tampa Bay, which includes Pinellas Park, over 1,200 people died in 2020. This is a significant increase over the 1,024 who died in 2019. In Pinellas County, drug deaths increased by 35% year-over-year. Also of note, in 2019, fentanyl was found in more than 3,200 of the state’s 5,000 overdose deaths. In 2020, this number increased by more than 52%.
New Program to Curb Tampa Bay’s Opioid Problem
A program called Project Opioid Tampa Bay has recently been launched in response to the area’s growing opioid problem. The new organization is a partnership between businesses, philanthropic organizations, and faith leaders. Together, they hope to address the problem by providing the necessary education and resources. This organization is being led by former Pinellas County state Rep. Jennifer Webb. She says that although there are effective, science-based solutions available to help curb the issue, simple resources like medications aren’t making their way to the public — and they hope to change that.
