Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Pascagoula DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

How to Establish Paternity in Pascagoula

In the state of Mississippi, it's necessary for unmarried parents to take steps to establish their child's legal paternity. When a child's mother is unmarried, having the father sign the birth certificate is not enough to legally establish paternity. Instead, both parents must voluntarily sign and file A Simple Acknowledgment of Paternity (ASAP) form or file a case in court.

Either the child's mother, the alleged father, the child, or the state's child support program can file a case in court up until the child reaches the age of 18. Often, the courts will require a DNA test. If the test shows that the man is 98% or more likely to be the child's biological father, the courts will rule that he is also the legal father. Once legal paternity is established, the man has all the rights and responsibilities that come with paternity, including the requirement to pay child support and the ability to request visitation and/or custody.

Pascagoula residents file paternity actions in Jackson County's Chancery Court, which handles domestic and family matters, including paternity suits. The court is located at 2915 Canty Street, Suite R, Pascagoula, MS 39567-4239.

The Benefits of Establishing Paternity in Mississippi

While Pascagoula residents may have to take additional steps to ensure a child has a legal father, the effort is well worth it. Legal paternity brings many benefits to all those involved. For example, once legal paternity is established, both parents are responsible for providing for the child's needs. Often, a single parent can't easily afford everything a child needs, so this benefits both the custodial parent and the child.

The child also benefits from having a stronger sense of identity, being able to access both sides of their family medical history, and being eligible for benefits such as the right to an inheritance, medical and life insurance, and both parents' Social Security and/or veterans' benefits. Once paternity is established, the father can also petition the courts for visitation and/or custody rights.

Mississippi's Presumption of Paternity

In Mississippi, when a child's mother is married, a presumption of paternity exists. According to Derek L. Hall, P.C., a Mississippi attorney serving clients across the state, including Pascagoula, the mother's husband is presumed to be the child's legal father until it is proven otherwise in court. This may be true even if the mother is not married at the time of birth, but was married at the time the child was conceived or at any point between the child's conception and birth. If the man is not the child's biological father, a court action is needed to remove this presumption.
