Substance abuse statistics for Ocala, FL
Ocala, Florida: Drug abuse trends
Marion County experienced a notable increase in drug overdoses in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Surveys showed that people with mental health and substance abuse issues found it harder to get the help they needed due to restrictions. Between March and June 2020, the county had over a 100% increase in overdose deaths compared to 2019. This led to one of the highest overdose death rates in the state, with more than 38 deaths per every 100,000 residents.
Even as life returned to normal, the rise in overdose deaths continued. To address this, the Ocala Recovery Project was initiated. This project brought together medical, judicial, first responders, and mental health representatives to enhance services for those in need.
Ocala man arrested after authorities seized drugs at his home
In May 2022, an Ocala man was arrested after investigators seized drugs at his home, and he was suspected of drug trafficking. A 48-year-old man was selling substances at home, including marijuana, cocaine, fentanyl, meth and other drugs. He became a person of interest for authorities in January when a man died at his property due to a fentanyl overdose. Following this, authorities received multiple complaints about the man still dealing drugs. The judge issued a search warrant, and firearms and narcotics-filled bags were found. The man is now facing multiple charges.
