Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Las Vegas DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Establishing paternity in Las Vegas, Nevada

If the mother is not married when conceiving or giving birth to a child, she will have to establish paternity. This can be done in three ways:

arrow_right_alt
Both the mother and father can sign a Voluntary Acknowledgement of Paternity that is filed with the State Registrar of Vital Statistics
arrow_right_alt
A judicial officer can declare the father through a court hearing, a stipulation order, or by default
arrow_right_alt
The child and potential father can take a DNA test to establish paternity between them

If the mother is married when giving birth, her husband is considered the legal father unless a court order states otherwise. If the mother was divorced or widowed for less than ten months, her former husband is regarded as the legal father.

DNA test reunites a 72-year-old man reunites with siblings

Ted Hardman was adopted as a baby but had been searching for his biological family for decades. He always wondered if he had any siblings. One day, he decided to take a DNA test and was hoping he could finally find his family.

After the DNA test, he discovered he had five siblings—brothers and sisters. He was eager to meet them, but he had no idea that his siblings did not know he existed! Ted's biological parents had already passed away. Still, many questions go unanswered, but the newly discovered family said this was all they needed to know for now.

Ted arranged a meeting with his siblings in Las Vegas. Although the reunion was very unexpected for five of the siblings, they are happy to have found each other. Ted says that all of the questions he has been asking himself are no longer necessary since he has been reunited with all of his siblings.
