Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the people being tested. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory. Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by registering online and shipping the specimens to us.

Legally Admissible DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible DNA testing service. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. In order for the results of a DNA test to hold up in court, for child support, or to change the name on a birth certificate, the test must be done at a clinic using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Los Angeles DNA testing technicians are trained to follow guidelines that ensure that the results can be used for legal purposes.

Establishing paternity in Los Angeles, CA

When parents of a child are married, often there is no need to establish paternity because the law assumes that the married couple is the child's legal parents. But, for example, the child does not have a legal father if born to parents who are unmarried at the time of conception or birth. For a father to be legally recognized, paternity must first be established through a Voluntary Acknowledgement of Paternity form or DNA test.

This applies even if the father can prove his relation to the child. Unless he is legally married to the mother, then he does not have any right or responsibilities toward the child.

Benefits of establishing paternity in Los Angeles, California

There are multiple reasons and benefits why people should make sure that the father of the child did establish his paternity. Besides the legal reasons, there are also emotional benefits of knowing who both parents of the child are.

According to California Courts: The Judicial Branch of California, legal rights and privileges can include financial support from both parents, child custody, health insurance, access to the family medical records, and the right to inherit and receive social security and veteran's benefits, if available.

DNA paternity test

Many people are curious if there is any way of DNA testing while pregnant and the answer is simple—yes. There are three different types of prenatal paternity tests. Two of them are needle-based tests and both of them hold a risk of causing a miscarriage. However, there is a third option - a non-invasive paternity blood test. This kind of test can be done as soon as nine weeks into the pregnancy and has zero risk.

All it takes is a simple blood draw from the mother's arm and a cheek swab of the potential father. There are multiple paternity centers in Los Angeles, California, that offer paternity testing even while pregnant.
