DNA Test – Los Angeles, California

Los Angeles CA DNA Testing Locations

Types of DNA Tests at our Los Angeles, California locations:

The most commonly ordered DNA test is a Paternity Test to conclusively establish whether or not a man is the biological father of a child.

Paternity Testing can be performed at our testing centers. DNA Testing can be done for other close family relationships, such as:

Grandparent DNA Test (if the father is not available for testing)

Sibling DNA Test (possible brothers, sisters, or half-siblings)

Avuncular DNA Test (aunt/uncle and niece/nephew)

Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the people being tested. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory. Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone’s DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by registering online and shipping the specimens to us.

Legally Admissible DNA Tests vs. “Peace of Mind” At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible DNA testing service. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. In order for the results of a DNA test to hold up in court, for child support, or to change the name on a birth certificate, the test must be done at a clinic using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Los Angeles DNA testing technicians are trained to follow guidelines that ensure that the results can be used for legal purposes.

Facts about DNA Testing in Los Angeles CA

DNA Study of Los Angelenos

In a 2019 Health Street study, we found that roughly one in four California residents have taken a DNA test at some point in the past. Forty percent of those tests were to determine paternity. Interestingly, 19 percent of Los Angelenos who got tested waited about a year before pursuing it.

Why Did Los Angeles Residents Hesitate to Get DNA Tested?

We asked the residents of LA who said they waited a year or more to get a DNA test why they hesitated. The answers ranged from fear to simple uncertainty. One respondent said that they were “not quite sure about the process.” Fortunately, it’s really simple – just an appointment and a cheek swab. We also picked up a popular fear that people would lose control of the data that is collected in the test.

Rest assured, Health Street’s DNA tests are entirely confidential and the results are not shared with the government. Finally, we encountered issues of family history, with one Angelino stating: “My biological dad was adopted and he was a crystal meth addict. I’m worried about who I might find if I go looking.”

DNA Test Proves L.A. In Vitro Fertilization Clinic Implanted Wrong Embryos

DNA testing was used to support a couple’s claim against Los Angeles-based CHA Fertility Clinic that they received the wrong embryos, bringing to term twin boys that were not genetically theirs. The same DNA test also revealed that the two babies were not genetically related to each other.

The couple, referred to as A.P. (the woman) and Y.Z. (the man) in the official complaint to protect their identities, used the self-proclaimed “mecca of reproductive medicine” as a last resort after trying to conceive for years. When A.P. finally had the couple’s twins in 2019, however, their jubilation quickly turned to confusion.

The DNA test results confirmed what the couple had already strongly suspected. Their first clue was that the clinic said the embryos A.P. was carrying were to be girls, but she ultimately had twin boys. The couple’s next surprise came after birth, when they saw that the two boys did not appear to be of Asian descent- as both A.P. and Y.Z. were.

The civil suit has been filed in the couple’s hometown of New York City, accusing both the clinic and two of its directors of negligence, battery, medical malpractice and several other counts.

Child Custody in the City of Angels

Los Angeles, like most of California, tends to be on the liberal side, and it’s family court policies reflect that. For example, when determining the primary custodial parent in a child custody case, the judge will not take into account the gender of the parents. Furthermore, they are encouraged to consider the nurturing relationship and environmental variables that each of the parent’s have and might create for the children in their homes.

In L.A. custody cases, the child’s opinion is strongly considered, especially if he or she is old enough to make an informed judgment. Like elsewhere, DNA tests will be ordered to determine paternity if either party disputes it. In general, the family court system attempts to go further than many other states to consider a fuller picture of the children in an attempt to ensure the best possible home environment.
