Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the people being tested. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory. Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by registering online and shipping the specimens to us.

Legally Admissible DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible DNA testing service. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. In order for the results of a DNA test to hold up in court, for child support, or to change the name on a birth certificate, the test must be done at a clinic using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Longmont DNA testing technicians are trained to follow guidelines that ensure that the results can be used for legal purposes.

Establishing paternity in Longmont, CO

Unmarried Longmont parents who have a child together need to establish legal paternity. If both parents agree about who the biological father is, they often choose to sign a Voluntary Acknowledgment of Paternity (VAP). This legally binding document will make the alleged father the legal father. After it has been completed and filed, the father's name can be added to the child's birth certificate. If the father changes his mind about paternity, he has 60 days to revoke it. After that, it is only possible to revoke the VAP with court action.

Either parent can file a court action if there is a disagreement about paternity. Establishing paternity through the court often involves DNA testing of the alleged father and the child. Genetic testing is an easy but reliable method of proving paternity, usually done by a cheek swab. The judge may consider the DNA test results while establishing paternity, but it is important to note that other factors may also influence the final decision.

DNA test reunited father and son after 37 years

It took them 37 years to reunite, but a DNA test finally brought Casper and Tom together. Casper's Filipino mother got pregnant by an American Navy sailor who returned to the USA without knowing she was pregnant. In an age where social media and cell phones did not yet exist, Casper's mother raised him alone. Casper knew his father was an American sailor but did not know much else.

Casper took a DNA test and found a man named Michael (his brother) from Colorado. After connecting with Michael, Casper could also connect with his father. His father had no idea he had another son and was pleased to find out! Their reunion occurred on Thanksgiving and was filled with love and tears.
