Avuncular DNA Test (aunt/uncle and niece/nephew)

Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the people being tested. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory. Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by registering online and shipping the specimens to us.

Legally Admissible DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible DNA testing service. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. In order for the results of a DNA test to hold up in court, for child support, or to change the name on a birth certificate, the test must be done at a clinic using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Lakeland DNA testing technicians are trained to follow guidelines that ensure that the results can be used for legal purposes.

DNA Testing Reunites Lakeland Mother With Her Biological Son

When Joanie Musso, a Lakeland resident, received a DNA test as a Mother's Day gift from her daughter, she expected to learn more about her ancestry. However, she did not anticipate that the test would reveal a secret she had kept for 49 years — that she had given up a child for adoption and had never told her other children.

Musso expected to take this piece of information to the grave with her and the revelation initially caused her some anxiety. However, after speaking with her son, they planned for him to fly to Lakeland for a three-day visit. She later told her daughter, "... you gave me the best Mother's Day present I ever could have gotten in my life, you gave me my son."

The "Miracle" of DNA Testing Reunites Lakeland-Area Family

After decades of searching without any luck, Lakeland-based Deanna Doss Shrodes was finally able to locate her biological father. She was adopted as an infant in 1966 after spending two months in foster care and was able to reunite with her birth mother in 1993. The two stayed in touch until her mother died in 2013, but her father's identity was a secret her mother took to the grave with her.

Shrodes, who completed her Master's in Leadership and Doctorate in Ministry from Southeastern University in Lakeland, had teams of volunteers helping to follow leads. Eventually, their efforts were rewarded, and she was reunited with her father. The two have met in person several times and continue to develop a relationship with one another. While the discovery created what was described as a "whirlwind of change," her father says, "I definitely do believe it was God that helped her to find me — It was a miracle."

Benefits of Establishing Paternity in Florida

When a child is born to unmarried parents in the state of Florida, that child is presumed to have no legal father until steps are taken to establish legal paternity. While this takes a bit of effort, according to attorneys at the Lakeland-based O'Mara Law Group, some of the benefits of doing so include:

The ability to establish child support

The right to have a say in how the child is raised

The right to request visitation with the child

The ability for the child to learn about their father's medical history

Legal paternity can be established in Florida by filing a Voluntary Acknowledgment of Paternity form or through a court order.
