Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Frisco DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

How to Establish Paternity in Frisco, TX

According to Texas family law, when a Frisco child is born to a married couple, there will be no need to establish paternity as the husband is automatically legally declared the father. However, unmarried Frisco parents will need to establish paternity to allow the biological father to obtain his legal paternal rights as well as place his name on the child's birth certificate.

In the state of Texas, Frisco parents may establish paternity through the completion of an Acknowledgment of Paternity Form (AOP). This form is used to legally identify the child's biological father and establish the parental relationship. It will first be presented for completion at the hospital following the child's birth but can be completed at a later date through an AOP-certified entity.

Rules and Regulations Relating to Paternity in Frisco, TX

Under the prior Texas Family Code, a previously presumed father would face great difficulty when attempting to remove any child support obligations if he later discovered he was not the child's biological father. Fortunately, under recent updates to the Texas legislature, Frisco parents who find themselves in a similar situation of mistaken paternity may now challenge their legal status in a Texas court.

Under the updated law, a Frisco man who was previously presumed to be the father has up to one year from the paternity establishment to file a petition to disestablish it. As a testament to the importance of DNA testing, even if a Frisco resident successfully disestablishes paternity, he may still be obligated to pay any overdue child support payments regardless.

Experts in Frisco, TX Say…

When a Frisco couple properly establishes paternity in the state of Texas, they can move forward with establishing a monthly child support agreement if necessary. According to Frisco family law attorney Mark Scroggins, Texas law holds both parents responsible for supporting their child, even if one or both parents are underage. When being assessed in court, a child support agreement will be established using various factors, including the child's relationship with both parents as well as any expenses for counseling, extracurricular activities, and childcare.
