Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone’s DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. “Peace of Mind” At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Frisco DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Facts about DNA Testing in Frisco TX

Texas Legislature Allows Fathers to Terminate Parent-Child Relationship for Mistaken Paternity

Back in 2011, state legislators changed the Texas Family Code to allow fathers who questioned their paternity to challenge their status in court. In most states, including Texas until this law passed, once a paternal relationship is determined in court, it is extremely difficult to legally change the designation. As a result, even a father who later learns he is not a child’s biological parent after being legally designated as such could not change their legal relationship in court.

Under this law, fathers have one year from when paternity is established to contest it in court. Even if the court terminates a father-child relationship, fathers are still responsible for any child support that is past due. Not applying the law retroactively was one of the compromises legislators had to make to pass the new rules.

Texas Woman Finds Out Her Mother’s Doctor Is Her Father Through DNA Testing and Petitions for New Law

Dallas native Eve Wiley knew she had been born through artificial insemination, but believed her father was an anonymous donor as recounted by her mother. Wiley’s mother eventually looked into the background of her father, Donor No. 106, learning who he was and ultimately facilitating a familial relationship between her daughter and her no-longer-anonymous father. After Eve Wiley’s firstborn began suffering from serious medical issues, Wiley chose to take an at-home DNA test to learn as much as she could about her background.

To Wiley’s great surprise, she learned that Donor No. 106 was not her father— her mother’s fertility doctor was instead. Since learning the shocking news, Wiley and her mother have begun working with state and national legislators to pass a law that would make it illegal to intentionally use any sperm, eggs or embryos during implantation without the prior authorization from the patient. Families like the Wileys have had little legal recourse in these situations in the past because there was no specific law making the bioswitch criminal.
