Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the people being tested. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory. Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by registering online and shipping the specimens to us.

Legally Admissible DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible DNA testing service. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. In order for the results of a DNA test to hold up in court, for child support, or to change the name on a birth certificate, the test must be done at a clinic using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Flagstaff DNA testing technicians are trained to follow guidelines that ensure that the results can be used for legal purposes.

Flagstaff, AZ DNA Testing

What Are DNA Tests Used For?

Whether you're navigating child paternity, completing a legal custody process, or legally altering an existing birth certificate, there are several reasons why you may need DNA testing in Flagstaff, AZ.

Paternity Testing

Paternity testing is one of the most frequently sought-after types of DNA testing in Flagstaff. After a child's birth, a mother may question the paternity of her child if she previously had relations with more than one individual. Similarly, paternity disputes can arise if either parent believes that the given paternity claim is incorrect. Flagstaff DNA testing can be used to eliminate uncertainty.

Child Custody and Support

When one parent disagrees with the parentage of a child and refuses to establish paternity, it can prevent the other from gaining custody or obtaining monthly child support assistance. A Flagstaff parent may need to request Coconino County Family Court assistance to determine paternity through DNA testing. If Flagstaff DNA testing can successfully verify the father, paternity can be established alongside child support and custody agreements.

Changing a Birth Certificate

In some unfortunate cases, a Flagstaff parent may learn of incorrect paternity after having already established paternity and child support agreements. To legally alter the father's name on the birth certificate and remove support obligations from the incorrect father, Coconino County Family Court will likely request proof of Flagstaff DNA testing to first identify the correct biological father.

Post-Mortem DNA Testing

When a loved one passes away, the family or a court may need to determine the biological relationship of the deceased to a family member, most often a child. Post-mortem DNA testing results may be needed to determine important matters such as survivor or social security benefits, wills and estates.

How DNA Tests Are Analyzed

A Flagstaff DNA test begins with the collection of genetic samples from two individuals. In most cases, collection is as simple as a cheek swab saliva sample. However, DNA can also be collected through hair follicles and blood samples. These genetic samples are then sent to a certified laboratory for a comprehensive analysis. During analysis, a technician will compare 21 different genetic markers from each sample to determine whether there is a DNA match.

How Long Does It Take to Receive DNA Test Results?

The wait time for Flagstaff DNA testing results comes down to the specimen type used for comparison.

Hair Follicle DNA Test – Up to two weeks after collection for results

Bear in mind that turnaround times are heavily dependent upon the specific selected provider.

Establishing Paternity in Arizona

When Flagstaff parents are not married at the time of their child's birth, they will need to establish paternity to legally declare the father's parental rights. If both parents agree on the paternity of a child, they can voluntarily establish paternity by completing an Acknowledgment of Paternity (AOP) at the hospital or at a later date through Arizona Child Support Services.

If either parent is unwilling to establish paternity voluntarily, the parent seeking the establishment must file a petition through Coconino County Family Court. According to Flagstaff family law attorney Jennifer Staskey, court paternity actions are generally determined by the results of DNA testing. If DNA testing identifies the biological father, paternity can then be established.
