Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the people being tested. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory. Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by registering online and shipping the specimens to us.

Legally Admissible DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible DNA testing service. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. In order for the results of a DNA test to hold up in court, for child support, or to change the name on a birth certificate, the test must be done at a clinic using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Cordova DNA testing technicians are trained to follow guidelines that ensure that the results can be used for legal purposes.

Local DNA Testing for Cordova, TN

Local DNA Stories

In 2020, a Shelby County man used DNA testing and found out he had two half-sisters. Charles Cook said that he always felt different from the rest of his family. When he was 17 years old, he learned that his dad was not his biological father. Forty years later, Cook took a DNA testing and found his half-sisters and a half-brother. Cook's biological father didn't know of him, either, and he, along with Cook's mother, has passed away.

Two of Cook's half-siblings live in Cleveland and one lives in Pittsburgh. The four of them communicated through email, phone calls, and texts.

Cook learned he was the only sibling to get his father's blue eyes. He continues to learn more about his father and is learning more about himself with things such as medical history and personality traits. Cook said he's glad he took the DNA test and connected with his relatives.

Experts Say...

The Burdette Law firm, serving Cordova and Shelby County, explains the meaning of paternity by saying, "'Paternity' derives from the Latin word 'pater' meaning father. In legal terms, 'establishing paternity' means determining a child's 'legal' father and the related rights and obligations of the father of the child." The law firm explains that every child naturally has a biological father, but not necessarily a legal father. "When paternity has been established it means that the child now has a legal father."

Proving Paternity for Child Custody Purposes in Cordova, TN

In Cordova, TN, when a child is born to married parents, the law presumes the husband to be the father. If the child is born to unmarried parents, paternity must be established for the child to have a legal father. Paternity can be established if both parents agree to sign an Acknowledgement of Paternity form. If either parent is uncertain of who the father is, or if paternity is disputed, DNA testing to prove paternity may be ordered by the court. In this case, DNA samples are taken from the mother, alleged father, and child. If the test determines that the alleged father is the biological father, an order of parentage will be issued by the court.
