Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Charlottesville DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

DNA Test Reunites Charlottesville Woman with Biological Sister

When Barbara Dameron took a DNA test, she hoped to learn more about her medical history and thought she might connect with half-siblings who were the offspring of her biological parents. She was not expecting to learn that she had a full sister. However, a DNA test revealed that her biological mother, who had given her up for adoption in 1956, had also given up another child the summer before. Dameron met her sister for the first time in a restaurant in Charlottesville. Following a three-hour reunion, the two continued to communicate, working to build a relationship and make up for the time they had lost.

How to Establish Paternity in Charlottesville

In the state of Virginia, when a child is born to parents who are married, the husband is automatically presumed to be the child's legal father. However, if the child's parents are unmarried, no presumption occurs, even if they live together. According to experts at the Charlottesville-based Tucker Griffin Barnes law firm, there are two primary ways to establish legal paternity. The first is for both parents to sign a Voluntary Acknowledgment of Paternity (VAOP) form. This is the easiest option but is not possible when there is a dispute over the child's paternity. In this case, a paternity action can be filed in the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court in the county where the child lives. Unless both parents agree to the identity of the child's father, a DNA paternity test will be required to determine biological paternity before a judge issues a ruling.

Benefits of Establishing Legal Paternity in Charlottesville

According to experts at the Michie Hamlett law firm, a man has no legal rights or responsibilities toward a child until paternity has been established. This means that he is not able to get a court order for visitation or custody and does not legally owe child support. Once legal paternity has been established, the child has the right to receive an inheritance from the father and gain access to Social Security, veterans, and/or disability benefits based on the father's record.
