Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the people being tested. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory. Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by registering online and shipping the specimens to us.

Legally Admissible DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible DNA testing service. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. In order for the results of a DNA test to hold up in court, for child support, or to change the name on a birth certificate, the test must be done at a clinic using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Atlanta DNA testing technicians are trained to follow guidelines that ensure that the results can be used for legal purposes.

Atlanta, Georgia - DNA Testing

Local DNA Stories

In 2017, two students attending the same university in Atlanta used DNA testing and discovered they were long-lost brothers. Kieron Christian Graham, 20, and Vincent Ghant, 29, knew about each other and have been looking to find each other for years after Kieron was adopted as a baby.

Their mother decided to put Kieron up for adoption when he was three months old, feeling like she could not give him what he needed at that time. Growing up, he wondered about his biological family. In 2016, his adoptive parents gave him a DNA test and he was matched to Ghant as his brother. After finding Ghant on a Facebook search, he sent him a message, and the brothers found out they'd been living fifteen minutes away from each other. Not only were they living close to each other, but they were attending the same university and shared the same major. Kieron was reunited with his biological brother and mother thanks to DNA testing.

Proving Paternity for Child Custody Purposes in Atlanta, GA

If a child is born to married parents, the husband is the child's legal father, and the parents do not need to establish paternity. In Atlanta, GA, paternity must be established if the parents are not married for the father to have visitation and custody rights to the child. If both parents agree about who the biological father is, they establish paternity by signing a Voluntary Paternity Acknowledgement form. If the parents disagree with who the biological father is, either party may request DNA testing to prove paternity. If the parents still disagree on establishing paternity voluntarily, they can go to court, and the judge will decide on the child's legal father and issue orders for visitation, custody, and child support. For child support cases, the Atlanta Division of Child Support Services must obtain DNA testing if paternity has not been established.

Experts Say...

Atlanta law firm Stearns‑Montgomery & Proctor explains the importance of paternity establishment. "A child born out of wedlock in Georgia is considered illegitimate, giving the mother of the child rights not available to the father," the law firm explained," In the state of Georgia, establishing paternity declares the identity of the biological father. The mother involved in a paternity action can then collect child support from the child's father. A father may initiate a paternity case to establish legal and physical custody rights. As the firm states, "Without first establishing paternity, these issues cannot be addressed by a court."
