Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Albuquerque DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Albuquerque, New Mexico - DNA testing

Establishing paternity in Albuquerque, New Mexico

If a woman gives birth to a child while not married, the biological father's name can be added to the birth certificate. This can be done by both the mother and the father signing an Acknowledgement of Paternity Statement form.

Legal responsibilities can also be defined by filing a paternity case. The mother or the father can file this case. To get custody of the child or visitation order, unmarried parents must establish paternity first. According to the New Mexico Courts, The District Court of New Mexico has the jurisdiction to determine custody in two cases. The District Court of New Mexico can determine custody if the child was born in the state and is under six months of age. If the child is older than six months, they must have been a resident of New Mexico for at least half a year.

When either of the parents contests the paternity, the court can order DNA testing to establish who is the biological father.

Man connects with his parents after 37 years thanks to a DNA test

When Mitch was born, his mother gave him up for adoption. Years passed, and he decided to take a DNA test to find his biological family. Thirty-seven years later, Mitch finally connected with his biological father. When he first saw his picture, he could not believe his eyes. The resemblance was unmistakable.

He decided to reach out to him and ask if his father knew anything about his mother. The father replied and said to him that they were still together and they had another two kids. He was put up for adoption because they were high school sweethearts, and when Mary discovered she was pregnant, she was still a teenager.

All these years, she kept his picture on her dresser next to photos of her other kids, who knew they had a brother somewhere. It was a closed adoption, so they hoped he would look for them one day. When his mother gave him for adoption, she also gave him a letter saying she hoped he was happy and in good hands.

Upon their reunion, Mitch wondered where the mirror came from because of the strong resemblance to his parents. He reassured his mother that he was happy, and she said that the reunion had finally brought closure.
