Rohypnol (Roofies) Urine Drug Test

Rohypnol is a benzodiazepine similar to Valium, Xanax, and Librium. However, its sedative effects are 7 to 10 times stronger than that of Valium. Rohypnol works by depressing the central nervous system. Rohypnol, which played a starring role in the popular movie, "The Hangover," is the brand name for Flunitrazepam, widely known as the amnesia-inducing date rape drug, Roofies. Less known is that this drug is sometimes legally prescribed as a short-term hypnotic to treat insomnia, or for pre-medication in surgical procedures. It is illegal without a prescription in the United States.

Rohypnol is best known as a date rape drug; it is sometimes slipped by an assailant into an unsuspecting person's drink at parties or clubs. After the tasteless drug has been unknowingly ingested, people may become extremely friendly and they don't remember what happened the next morning. Because Rohypnol causes forgetfulness, so many people who have been victimized do not remember the details of their attack. This makes it difficult to find the responsible parties and bring them to justice.

Before 1997, the drug was colorless and tasteless. However, the drug was reformulated in 1997 to turn a light-colored drink blue. This change was made in an effort to ensure there was no accidental ingestion of the drug by unsuspecting people. Unfortunately, the generic versions of the drug may not contain this blue dye. Therefore, it is still possible for this "club drug" to be used as a date rape drug.

Although Rohypnol is best known as the date rape drug, it is most often abused for other reasons. The drug is usually used by cocaine and heroin abusers, college students, street gang members, rave party attendees and high school students in an effort to boost a heroin high or modulate the effects of cocaine. The drug is most often consumed orally and is frequently combined with alcohol. However, it is also occasionally snorted.

Chronic abuse of Rohypnol can cause gastrointestinal disturbances, slurred speech, lack of coordination, loss of motor control, dizziness and drowsiness. Higher doses of Rohypnol can even cause respiratory depression and put the person at risk of complications leading to death.
