Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Warsaw DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

How to Establish Paternity in Warsaw, Indiana

In the state of Indiana, there are several ways to establish a child's legal paternity. If the child's mother was married at the time of birth or in the 300 days prior to the birth, her husband is presumed to be the child's legal father, and no legal action is required. If the mother is unwed, both parents can sign and file a Voluntary Acknowledgment of Paternity form, which also adds the father's name to the child's birth certificate. If there is a dispute over the child's paternity, a court order is typically needed, and a DNA test may be ordered. Warsaw residents can initiate a court case through the Kosciusko County court system.

Benefits of Establishing Paternity

There are several reasons to go through the steps required to establish a child's legal paternity. According to experts at the Warsaw-based Taylor Law Office, paternity must be established before the courts can give the father parenting time or custody rights. It's also required before an order for financial support can be issued for the child.

In addition, establishing paternity gives the father the right to have a say in the child's medical care, schooling, place of residence, and more. The mother benefits by receiving financial support for her child, while the child benefits from having a relationship with both parents. Once paternity is established, the child also has the right to receive an inheritance from the father and receive Social Security and/or veteran's benefits based on the father's records.

Timeline for Establishing Paternity in Indiana

The state of Indiana places limitations on when a child's legal paternity can be established. Attorneys at the Warsaw-area Keffer Hirschauer law firm explain that if a Voluntary Acknowledgment of Paternity is not filed at the hospital when the child is born, there is generally a time limit of two years after the child is born. However, exceptions may be granted in certain circumstances. For example, both the mother and father can request an extension by jointly filing an affidavit up until the child's 18th birthday.
