DNA Test – Vineland, New Jersey

Vineland NJ DNA Testing Locations

Types of DNA Tests at our Vineland, New Jersey clinics:

Paternity Testing can conclusively establish whether or not a man is the biological father of a child.

Relationship Testing for other close family relationships can be performed at our testing centers. Our DNA testing services can confirm or deny biological relationships between grandparents, grandchildren, siblings, half-siblings, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews:

Grandparent DNA Test (if the father is not available for testing)
Sibling DNA Test (possible brothers, sisters, or half-siblings)
Avuncular DNA Test (aunt/uncle and niece/nephew)

Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone’s DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. “Peace of Mind” At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Vineland DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Additional Vineland, New Jersey DNA Testing Information

Presumption of Paternity in New Jersey

According to family attorneys Helmer, Conley & Kasselman, a firm that practices in Vineland and the surrounding area, there are certain circumstances when paternity is presumed. This includes:

When the child’s biological mother is married to a man within the 300 days prior to the child’s birth
The child’s biological mother and a man attempt to be married before the child’s birth

When a child is born to parents that aren’t married and don’t fall into one of the categories above, the parents must take steps to establish legal paternity.

NJ’s Parenting Opportunity Program (POP) Helps Vineland Parents

The state of New Jersey has established a Paternity Opportunity Program (POP) that assists unmarried parents with establishing paternity. This allows parents to file a Certificate of Parentage for free if it’s done at the hospital. Paternity can also be established at a later date by filing the form with your local registrar’s office or county welfare agency. In Vineland, this would be the Vineland City Health Department, which is located at 640 E Wood St, Vineland, NJ 08360.

Establishing Paternity Without Voluntary Acknowledgment

If both parents don’t agree about the child’s paternity, either the child’s mother, the custodial parent, or the potential father can file an allegation of paternity with the courts. The Cumberland County Family Division Courthouse is located at 60 W Broad St STE 1, Bridgeton, NJ 08302.

Next, the parties will have to undergo DNA testing. If a test shows there is a 95% or higher chance that the man is the biological father, the courts will presume him to be the father. If the test shows lower than a 95% chance, the man will be excluded as the child’s potential legal father.
