Timonium MD DNA Testing Locations

Types of DNA Tests at our Timonium, Maryland clinics:

Paternity Testing can conclusively establish whether or not a man is the biological father of a child.

Relationship Testing for other close family relationships can be performed at our testing centers. Our DNA testing services can confirm or deny biological relationships between grandparents, grandchildren, siblings, half-siblings, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews:

Grandparent DNA Test (if the father is not available for testing)
Sibling DNA Test (possible brothers, sisters, or half-siblings)
Avuncular DNA Test (aunt/uncle and niece/nephew)

Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Timonium DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Establishing Paternity in Timonium, MD

There is no need to establish paternity when a married Timonium couple has a child, as Maryland law presumes the husband is the biological father and automatically grants him paternal rights. For an unmarried father to gain legal rights over his child, he and the child's mother will be required to establish paternity in the state of Maryland. Establishing paternity creates a legal bond between child and father which allows the father's name to be placed on the child's birth certificate.

To establish paternity, both parents will need to complete an Affidavit of Parentage. This method is completely voluntary and will be presented at the hospital or birthing facility where the child is delivered. For instances when the affidavit cannot be completed at this time, Timonium parents can complete one through a Baltimore County Child Support Administration office. This method of establishing paternity should only be used if the parents are confident in their child's paternity or if DNA testing has been completed to accurately determine the biological father.

Rescinding a Paternity Affidavit in Timonium, MD

In certain instances, two Timonium parents may be quick to establish paternity and later discover that their paternity presumption was incorrect. In the state of Maryland, both parents have up to 60 days after filing the form to rescind a Paternity Affidavit. The state requires that either mother or previously presumed father submit an Affidavit of Parentage Rescission Form to cancel this legal document.

If the 60-day mark passes, the two will need to file a petition in court to have the form rescinded. In such cases, the court may request the use of DNA testing to determine if the claim is correct. Likewise, proof of paternity fraud, duress, or material mistake will be requested to rescind the Paternity Affidavit.

Experts in Timonium, MD Say…

By establishing paternity in the state of Maryland, a Timonium parent can then request monthly child support services. According to Timonium Family Law Attorney Amar Weisman, the state of Maryland uses a formula to construct a monthly support amount. Because situations with parents differ from case to case, the formula addresses numerous factors.

Some of the factors in a child support case include annual income, level of physical custody, and other needs of the child, such as health insurance and education. With these various factors in mind, an amount will be constructed and requested from the parent which he or she will be required to pay out monthly.
