Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the people being tested. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory. Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone’s DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by registering online and shipping the specimens to us.

Legally Admissible DNA Tests vs. “Peace of Mind” At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible DNA testing service. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. In order for the results of a DNA test to hold up in court, for child support, or to change the name on a birth certificate, the test must be done at a clinic using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Terre Haute DNA testing technicians are trained to follow guidelines that ensure that the results can be used for legal purposes.

61 Year Old Terre Haute Man Finds a Family He Never Knew He Had

After years of searching and DNA tests, he has now confirmed that he has three half-brothers, a half-sister, and many nieces and nephews. Establishing Paternity in Terre Haute

In Indiana, a man is presumed to be a child’s legal father if he’s married to the mother at the time the child is born or was married to her in the 300 days prior to the birth. In this case, no action is needed. However, if a child is born to unmarried parents, they must establish legal paternity.

The easiest way to do this is for both parents to sign a paternity affidavit, which also adds the father’s name to the child’s birth certificate. This paperwork is filed with the Vital Records Office, and the child’s birth certificate can be picked up within two weeks after filing the paperwork. The Vigo County Vital Records Office is located at 171 Oak Street Terre Haute, IN 47807. If both parents don’t agree about the child’s paternity, either one can file for a court order. In this case, a DNA test will be required before the courts make a ruling.
