Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Sioux Falls DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

In South Dakota, establishing paternity means that parents voluntarily sign a Paternity Affidavit, or they go to the court and the judge signs a court order establishing the legal father. Court orders often include a DNA test that shows the probable paternity, and if it's 99 percent or higher, the alleged father can become a legal father based on the judge's decision.

DNA test reunites mother and daughter reunited after more than four decades

Kimberly was adopted as a young child but always wanted to find her birth mother. Cheri felt the same need even though it was her who gave up and that little girl. Through the years, they tried everything to find each other, never even knowing the other was looking.

Cheri was an unmarried teen when she got pregnant in 1972, so she hid it and only told her closest friend. Her parents and boyfriend had no idea the whole time. They only learned about it after she gave up on the baby and never spoke about her again. Two years and seven months later, she had a son with her husband. This son had a different father than her daughter.

Years later, Kimberly had a DNA match with a man from South Dakota. It was Cheri's brother, and she was shocked and so happy. When Cheri saw her picture, there was no question it was her daughter. They spoke on the phone and planned a meeting. After six days together, they are already planning many more gatherings.
