Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the people being tested. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory. Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by registering online and shipping the specimens to us.

Legally Admissible DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible DNA testing service. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. In order for the results of a DNA test to hold up in court, for child support, or to change the name on a birth certificate, the test must be done at a clinic using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Scranton DNA testing technicians are trained to follow guidelines that ensure that the results can be used for legal purposes.

Voluntary Establishment of Paternity in Scranton, PA

In the state of Pennsylvania, when a child is born to parents who are unmarried, there are two ways to establish paternity: voluntarily or involuntarily. When both parents agree on the identity of the child's biological father, they can complete a Voluntary Acknowledgment of Paternity form and file it with the state Department of Human Services. This form can be completed at the hospital when the child is born or later obtained from the Domestic Relations office of the county courts or the local Department of Public Welfare (County Assistance). For Scranton residents, the County Assistance Office is located at the State Office Building, 100 Lackawanna Ave #200, Scranton, PA 18503 and the Domestic Relations office is located at 123 Wyoming Ave., Scranton, PA 18503.

Filing a Complaint for Paternity

When a child's mother and alleged father do not agree about the child's paternity or one party refuses to sign a Voluntary Acknowledgment, it may be necessary to petition the courts for an "order of paternity." According to Kalinoski Law, a Scranton-based paternity rights law firm, a judge will have a hearing to review the evidence in the case. If the judge believes that the evidence suggests the man may be the child's father, he or she may order a DNA paternity test to confirm biological paternity before issuing an order.

Reasons to Request DNA Paternity Testing

There are many reasons why an individual may seek out a DNA paternity test. According to the Scranton-area O'Malley Law Office, LLC, a DNA test is commonly used to determine an individual's responsibility and legal obligations to care for his child. Genetic testing may also be required to establish child visitation or custody, to request or contest child support payments, or to ensure a child is eligible to receive his or her legal father's financial and medical benefits.
