Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Salt Lake City DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Salt Lake City, Utah - DNA Testing

Local DNA Stories

In 2021 in Salt Lake City, a family that used DNA testing was shocked to find out that their son isn't actually related to his father. Vanner and Donna Johnson could not have a second son, so they turned to IVF for another child, but there was a mix-up that wouldn't be discovered for more than a decade. Their son's actual biological father was unknown at this time, so the family decided to take another DNA test to find out who he was. Vanner's research led him to Devin McNeil, who he contacted to break the news. The two men researched what could have happened and discovered there was a time they were both at a clinic at the same time when the mix-up occurred. The families offered support to each other, sent emails, FaceTimed, and met at a Utah park. Kelly McNeil said, "Just to accept that they have a half-brother out there and just someone else to love, we see them at the park together playing and they just turned this hard situation and something that should've never happened into something good." The families spoke out about their story, determined to keep it from happening to someone else.

Proving Paternity for Child Custody Purposes in Salt Lake City, UT

Unmarried parents in Salt Lake City must establish paternity for a child to have a legal father. If both parents agree about who the biological father is, they can sign a Voluntary Declaration of Paternity. If either parent questions the child's biological father, the form should not be signed until DNA testing determines paternity. If one parent still refuses to establish paternity voluntarily, they can go to court, and the court will likely order DNA testing to determine the child's biological father.

Experts Say...

Salt Lake City attorneys Hepworth & Associates explains that during a court action, the judge will take testimony and evidence into consideration when determining paternity. "A judicial paternity order legally establishes paternity, allows the father's name to be added to the birth certificate (if issued in Utah), establishes a child support order for both parents, establishes a medical support order, can change the child's name, can address custody, and can set up a visitation schedule," the firm said.
