DNA Test – Saint George, Utah

Saint George UT DNA Testing Locations

Types of DNA Tests at our Saint George, Utah locations:

The most commonly ordered DNA test is a Paternity Test to conclusively establish whether or not a man is the biological father of a child.

Paternity Testing can be performed at our testing centers. DNA Testing can be done for other close family relationships, such as:

Grandparent DNA Test (if the father is not available for testing)
Sibling DNA Test (possible brothers, sisters, or half-siblings)
Avuncular DNA Test (aunt/uncle and niece/nephew)

Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the people being tested. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory. Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone’s DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by registering online and shipping the specimens to us.

Legally Admissible DNA Tests vs. “Peace of Mind” At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible DNA testing service. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. In order for the results of a DNA test to hold up in court, for child support, or to change the name on a birth certificate, the test must be done at a clinic using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Saint George DNA testing technicians are trained to follow guidelines that ensure that the results can be used for legal purposes.

DNA Info for Saint George UT

Local DNA Stories

A Washington County man, Kaden Gubler, originally from Santa Clara, always knew he was adopted at two days old. After searching for his biological family for ten years, he found nothing, even with the help of a private investigator. Since Utah is a mutual consent state, he received no information from his adoption agency.

Gubler’s mother gave him a DNA test and he was able to receive information about distant relatives. Later, he received two matches that were close relatives that ended up being a half-sister and an uncle on his mother’s side. He was able to look them up on Facebook and not long after, started chatting with them.

Eventually, he was able to find his biological mother and spoke with her on the phone. “My biological mother wanted to give me a better life. She moved from Iowa to Utah to give me up for adoption,” he said.

Because of DNA testing, Gubler was able to meet four half-siblings, his biological grandmother, and his biological uncle.

Proving Paternity for Child Custody Purposes in St. George, UT

There are three ways to establish paternity in St. George, UT.

The parents can agree to sign a Voluntary Declaration of Paternity.
The parents may proceed with an administrative paternity order.
Paternity may be established through the court.

In St. George, UT, a court order for DNA testing is not necessary if both the mother and father will voluntarily take the test. If either the man or woman refuses to take the DNA test, they can file a Motion for Genetic Testing.

Experts Say…

Attorney Benjamin L. Lawrence at Hepworth & Associates which serves St. George, UT, explains the process of establishing paternity with a court order. “The third option is to obtain a court order of paternity, which, unlike the others, gives an unmarried father the same rights and responsibilities as his married counterpart. This method also provides additional benefits to the child. When a mother disputes a man’s claim to have sired her offspring, or when a father disputes a woman’s claim that he is the one, DNA testing is usually considered the gold standard.”
