DNA Test - Reno, Nevada

Reno NV DNA Testing Locations

Types of DNA Tests at our Reno, Nevada locations:

The most commonly ordered DNA test is a Paternity Test to conclusively establish whether or not a man is the biological father of a child.

Paternity Testing can be performed at our testing centers. DNA Testing can be done for other close family relationships, such as:

Grandparent DNA Test (if the father is not available for testing)
Sibling DNA Test (possible brothers, sisters, or half-siblings)
Avuncular DNA Test (aunt/uncle and niece/nephew)

Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the people being tested. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory. Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by registering online and shipping the specimens to us.

Legally Admissible DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible DNA testing service. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. In order for the results of a DNA test to hold up in court, for child support, or to change the name on a birth certificate, the test must be done at a clinic using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Reno DNA testing technicians are trained to follow guidelines that ensure that the results can be used for legal purposes.

Establishing paternity in Reno, NV

When a father is established as the legal father of a child, he will have parental rights and responsibilities. Establishing paternity can also have multiple benefits for the child, which can include:

Financial support
Health insurance benefits from each parent
Knowing medical histories on both sides of the family
Feeling more connected to their entire identity
Social security or military benefits

In Nevada, if the mother is not married at the time of birth or conception, parents can establish paternity in these two ways:

Both parents must sign a VOP (Voluntary Acknowledgment of Paternity) and file it with the Bureau of Health Planning and Statistics, Office of Vital Records
A judge can establish paternity after a court hearing, which in most cases also includes DNA testing

DNA test reunites Nevada sisters after 48 years

Michele is a real estate agent who has lived in Nevada since 1994. When she took a DNA test one day, she discovered a 25-year-old family secret. She found that she had a half-brother, and he connected her to her sister Tricia.

The sisters quickly realized their children attended the same school, so they attended the graduation ceremony at the same time! They even had similar pictures of the stage from different angles. The sisters found out they both have the same biological father but different mothers. As it turns out, seven half-siblings were connected by their father, and the two sisters were only about five months apart.

Since the sisters met, they have been spending a lot of time together trying to make up for all the years they had lost. Despite their 48 years apart, they consider themselves best friends and even started a real estate business together.
