Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Phoenix DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Phoenix MD DNA Testing Information

Why Establishing Paternity is Important in Phoenix, MD

Under Maryland law, when a child is born to unmarried parents, only the child's mother will possess legal parental rights. Without a documented husband, the state does not know who to legally recognize as the child's biological father. To gain legal rights, both mother and father will need to successfully establish paternity in the state of Maryland.

A legal bond between child and father is created by establishing paternity. This will allow the child to receive benefits from both parents, including social security and medical benefits. Likewise, if either parent needs to request child support services, Child Support Services will require proof of paternity establishment.

How to Establish Paternity in Phoenix, MD

In the state of Maryland, recent Phoenix parents can establish paternity in one of two ways. If both parties are willing to establish paternity, the simplest way to do so is by completing an Affidavit of Parentage. This legally binding document declares the child's biological father and allows his details to be placed on the birth certificate. This form will first be presented at the hospital, but can be completed later through a Baltimore County Vital Statistics or Department of Health office.

If a child's parent refuses to sign an Affidavit of Parentage or has doubt in the child's correct paternity, the second way to establish paternity is through a court order. Through the Baltimore County Family Court, either parent can file a paternity petition to legally establish paternity in the state of Maryland. This process will typically require DNA testing of the mother, child, and presumed father to accurately determine the biological connection and declare paternity.

Experts in Phoenix, MD Say…

Following a paternity establishment, two Phoenix parents may require the assistance of the courts to help establish a legal custody order. According to Phoenix Family Law Attorney Gerard Miles, the state of Maryland eradicated the "maternal preference doctrine" which previously favored mothers in custody cases.

Instead, the courts will now assess both family parties, including current living and income situations, child's preferences, and criminal history, to create a custody agreement that favors the wellbeing of the child.
