Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Metairie DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Proving Paternity for Child Custody Purposes in Metairie, LA

Two parents who are not married when their child is born need to establish paternity for the child to have a legal father. In Metairie, LA, If the parents have no doubt about who the father is, they can voluntarily sign an Acknowledgement of Paternity form when the baby is born.

But for parents who are not sure of the father or have any doubts, paternity should be tested with DNA testing before legally establishing paternity. DNA samples are taken from the alleged father, mother, and child and sent to the lab for testing. The test compares the child's sample with the mother's and alleged father's samples. The test will either show that the man is not the father or can show by 99.9 percent probability that he is the child's biological father. In Metairie, LA, the DNA test must show a 99.9 percent probability that he's the father. Louisiana's probability requirement is the highest in the United States.

Once he's determined to be the biological father, he can sign the Acknowledgement of Paternity form and avoid going to court.

Paternity Lawyer, Michael D. Conroy, PLC works in Metairie, LA. Conroy explains the importance of establishing paternity. "Paternity, the biological connection between a father and his child, is important to establish a father's legal responsibilities toward the child and the child's entitlement to certain financial benefits." According to Conroy, establishing paternity gives the child rights to veteran's benefits, social security, inheritance, and financial support from the father. The child can also obtain access to medical records from the father and a U.S. immigrant visa or citizenship. He says, "A child may also benefit psychologically from knowing who his or her actual father is, and it may help forge a stronger bond between the two."
