DNA Testing Manchester NH

Manchester NH DNA Testing Locations

Types of DNA Tests at our Manchester NH clinics:

Paternity Testing can conclusively establish whether or not a man is the biological father of a child.

Relationship Testing for other close family relationships can be performed at our testing centers. Our DNA testing services can confirm or deny biological relationships between grandparents, grandchildren, siblings, half-siblings, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews:

Grandparent DNA Test (if the father is not available for testing)
Sibling DNA Test (possible brothers, sisters, or half-siblings)
Avuncular DNA Test (aunt/uncle and niece/nephew)

Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone’s DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. “Peace of Mind” At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Manchester DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Facts about DNA Testing in Manchester NH

Manchester’s Approach to DNA Connects to the Past and the Future

Although currently the city’s residents are primarily white, there has historically been a strong African-American connection to the area. Right now, 300-year-old remains from the nearby African Burying Ground in Portsmouth will undergo DNA testing and genome sequencing, with the hopes of learning more about the lives of the individuals buried here, as well as whether there are any living descendants who can be connected to this area by DNA testing.

This historic undertaking is being organized by the Portsmouth African Burying Ground Stewardship Committee. This committee was established as a Blue Ribbon Commission in 2019, and was tasked with overseeing the monument that’s been placed at the site, as well as the DNA testing and sequencing on the eight burials that were exhumed from the site in 2003.

How New Hampshire is Protecting DNA in the Future

Although this news has been exciting to many local historians, others more focused on privacy have worried about the possibilities that can occur when personal data like DNA and fingerprints enters the public sphere. Last year, a bill was proposed by State Rep. Dave Luneau that would amend the New Hampshire Consumer Protection Act to protect personal data from being monetized by corporations and businesses. This does not involve DNA tests administered by courts or law enforcement, which are often used in Manchester to establish paternity for legal purposes.

According to the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services, “Paternity is established by marriage, Affidavit of Paternity, or Court Order.” If the father is not involved with the child or aware of the case, the Division of Child Support Services (DCSS) notifies the Putative Father that he has been named as a possible father and asks him to agree to DNA testing or consent to parentage. The DCSS pays for all DNA testing, making it as stress-free as possible for both parties.

Manchester: Focused On Industry and Education

Named for Manchester in the United Kingdom, the American Manchester in New Hampshire is New England’s most populous city. When it was originally settled, the primary industry was industrial manufacturing and textiles. Along the Merrimack River, many mills popped up, and now these beautiful red brick buildings have been renovated and are used for various commercial and residential purposes.

Manchester and the surrounding area is home to many families, who enjoy the area’s many public, private, and charter schools. For a medium-sized city, Manchester has a large number of post-secondary schools, including the New Hampshire Institute of Art and the University of New Hampshire at Manchester.
