Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the people being tested. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory. Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by registering online and shipping the specimens to us.

Legally Admissible DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible DNA testing service. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. In order for the results of a DNA test to hold up in court, for child support, or to change the name on a birth certificate, the test must be done at a clinic using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Lees Summit DNA testing technicians are trained to follow guidelines that ensure that the results can be used for legal purposes.

Lee's Summit, Missouri - DNA Testing

Lee's Summit Woman Reunites with Biological Father After 35 Years

Lee's Summit resident Tiffany Dow always wondered why she looked so different from her family. While both her mother and the man she believed was her father were blonde with blue eyes, she had dark hair, dark eyes, and distinctive features. After taking a DNA test, she was surprised to learn that she had a diverse ancestry and was even more surprised when her mother told her that her father may have been a man she had a rendezvous with back in 1971.

After a bit of research, Dow was able to connect with her biological father and the two eventually met in person. When asked about the reunion, Dow said, "It's like a miracle. I kept saying that inside, 'I have a dad. It's a miracle.' It really was a miracle."

Establishing Paternity in Lee's Summit

In Missouri, when a child is born to unwed parents, steps must be taken to establish paternity. According to Lee's Summit family law firm Leonard Rodarte Siegel LLC, when there is a dispute about the identity of the child's biological father, a DNA test is required. This must be done through a government-approved agency and must show at least a 98% chance of paternity for a man to be named a child's legal father.

If both parents agree about the child's paternity, they can sign a paternity affidavit, which acknowledges the man as the child's father, establishes legal paternity, and allows the man's name to be added to the child's birth certificate.

Paternity Fraud Issues in Lee's Summit

According to Strange Law Firm, a paternity law firm that serves Lee's Summit and the surrounding area, paternity fraud is a widespread problem throughout the United States. In some cases, paternity is alleged or established incorrectly due to an honest mistake. However, there are other situations where a mother may intentionally claim a man is her child's father when she knows he is not.

Since there are no laws on the books making paternity fraud a punishable crime and it's typically difficult to prove that someone knowingly lied, this type of fraud often occurs with little or no consequences. Fathers or alleged fathers can help protect themselves by demanding a DNA paternity test to either prove or disprove paternity. It's important to request a DNA test whenever there is any question regarding the identity of a child's biological father; otherwise, a man could end up paying child support for a child that is not his.
