Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone’s DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. “Peace of Mind” At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Danbury DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Establishing paternity in Danbury, Connecticut

When married parents have a child together, Connecticut law automatically establishes the husband as the legal father. However, unwed parents from Connecticut must establish paternity by signing a Voluntary Acknowledgement of Paternity (VAP) or going to court. The VAP is a legally-binding document that establishes the man as the legal father, so it is essential that both parents agree before signing. After sixty days from signing, neither parent can revoke it.

When Danbury parents disagree about paternity or are unsure who the biological father is, they often choose to go to court to establish paternity. The judge will usually order the alleged father and the child to take a DNA test to prove whether there is a father-child relationship. The judge can then consider the DNA test results in the paternity decision, but it is important to note that other factors may also be considered. After legal paternity is established, the parents can also go through the court to establish visitation hours, custody, and child support if necessary.

DNA test reunited Connecticut man with daughter

Tony grew up in Colorado, and when he was seventeen, he was dating a girl who got pregnant. She left school and swore to him the child was not his. Years passed, and even though he was told he was not the father, his gut feeling was telling him otherwise. He tried to contact his ex-girlfriend, but she never told him much. Eventually, he met a new woman, married her, and moved to Connecticut.

His wife gave him a DNA test for Christmas, and because Tony was a child of seven, there were a lot of matches for cousins. But one day, he got a message saying he was the biological father of a woman named Reina. At first, he was skeptical, but once they saw her picture, there was no way they were not related. Immediately, they exchanged numbers and finally talked. They met on Father’s Day, which was extraordinary because it was the first Father’s Day he had ever celebrated. But the reunion wasn’t over yet! Some time passed, and Tony received another message from another daughter—Tina. Tina was joyfully overwhelmed with the realization that she had found her father and said she immediately fell to the floor crying. Tony was thankful that he took the DNA test and was even reunited with a second daughter.
