Avuncular DNA Test (aunt/uncle and niece/nephew)

Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the people being tested. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory. Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by registering online and shipping the specimens to us.

Legally Admissible DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible DNA testing service. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. In order for the results of a DNA test to hold up in court, for child support, or to change the name on a birth certificate, the test must be done at a clinic using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Corpus Christi DNA testing technicians are trained to follow guidelines that ensure that the results can be used for legal purposes.

Corpus Christi, Texas - DNA Testing

Local DNA Stories

In 2018, a long-lost sister used DNA testing and was able to reunite with her siblings. The siblings, residing in Victoria, spent almost six decades hoping to reunite with the sister that was given up for adoption at birth. Before their mother died, she mentioned to them that one day they should find their sister and asked the siblings to ask their sister, Alma Jean Perez, for forgiveness. Perez knew her birth parents' names and that she was born in Corpus Christi but knew nothing else. And when her adoptive parents died, her biological family became harder to trace. But after the sisters, including Perez, used DNA testing, they were able to reunite.

Proving Paternity for Child Custody Purposes in Corpus Christi, TX

Paternity means legal fatherhood, and unmarried parents that have a child in Corpus Christi must establish paternity for the child to have a legal father and for the father to have rights to the child. In some cases, the court requires an alleged father to take a DNA test to prove paternity. DNA testing is ordered by the court when the mother and alleged father disagree about who the biological father is.

Unmarried parents who agree about the biological father can establish paternity voluntarily by signing an Acknowledgement of Paternity form.

Once paternity is established, the father can have his name added to the birth certificate, and the parents can receive visitation, custody, and child support orders.

Experts Say...

Spivey Law Firm in Corpus Christi, TX gives reasons why mothers and fathers want to establish paternity. According to the law firm, "A mother may wish to establish paternity to ensure that the child receives child support and any other benefits available to the child." Fathers also benefit from establishing paternity. "A father may desire to establish paternity to gain child custody and visitation rights," the law firm explained, "If paternity has not been established a father has no legal right to make choices regarding the raising of his child."
